　「〜の犠牲になる」はどの辞書を見ても fall (a) victim to 〜　となっています。もし主語が複数のときはどうなるのでしょうか。fall victims to 〜 とでもなるのでしょうか。小生が見た複数形主語は次のように単数形になっていました。victim はまだ不可算名詞のイメージが強いようです。

fall victim to〜についてのおたずねがありましたが，確かに主語が複数でも victim のままのものが多いようです。

1. Several children fell victim to the disease.（新編英和活用大辞典）

2. Thousands fell victim to the epidemic.(OALD5)

3. Hundreds of peasants fled their mountain villages for fear they would fall victim to errant air and artillery strikes.(Time,1994.1.17)

もっとも，Time(1993.12.20)に

She launched this portion of her argument with a reading from Hitler's Mein Kampf:"The great masses of the people ...will more easily fall victims to a great lie than a small one."

という例もあります（「我が闘争」の原文ではどのようになっているのか知りませんが）。　ただ，fall victims to　が一般的というにはあまりにも例が少なく，こうした set expression の中では victim が不加算名詞的にとられられているというご意見には賛成です。

英英辞典が fall victim to 〜 の見出しなのに英和辞典のほとんどすべてが fall (a) victim to 〜 の見出しにしているのはどうしてでしょうか。語法にうるさい GENIUS まで右へならえしています。fall victim to 〜 と冠詞なしの見出しにしてはどうでしょうか。小生はまだ fall a victim to　〜 と冠詞がついた例を見たことはありません。どなたか例文をお示しくだされば有り難く思います。

　ヒットラーの Mein Kampf の原文はドイツ語なので、英語の fall victims to 〜　の表現とは直接参考にはならないと思います。（独和辞典では zum Opfer fallen ですが、小生はこの部分の原文を知りませんので、この点はまったく自信がありません）

　思うに補語として使われたこの victim はタイプはちがいますが、turn traitor; be master of などのように形容詞的なニュアンスをもって受け止められているのでしょうか。

　例文が少ないので何とも言えませんが、(3)では主語 thanks の直後に動詞がくると thanks の複数イメージに引かれて複数扱いになるのに対し、(1)では副詞 also がはいることにより単数概念が残ったと思われます。(1)と(2)は同一人物が書いているのに thanks を無意識のうちに単複両用しているのはおもしろいと思いました。

　これに対して my＋形容詞(devoted, deepest, heartfeltなど)＋thanksの形では複数扱いばかりでした。

　どなたかが A special thanks goes to 〜 の例をあげておられましたが、冠詞 a があるのは少数派に属するようです。主語ではなく give special thanks to 〜 のように動詞の目的語として使われる場合、まず冠詞 a はつかないでしょう。謝意を表すのに Acknowledgments と複数形見出しが圧倒的に多いのですが、An acknowledgmentと単数形見出しが１例ありました。これはわずか９行しかなく人名も書かれてなかったので、そうなのかなと変に感心しました。

　それにしても本を出版するにあたりお世話になった方々を、日本の書物では数行でおしまいにするところなのに、延々数ページにわたり載せるのはこれも文化の違いかなと思った次第です。

偶然にも最近同じ問題に興味を持ってコーパスに当たってみたばかりでしたので，ちょっとご紹介します。

COBUILD Directで検索すると，

year round, can so easily fall a victim to gossip and ill luck and Line 1 of 1. Corpus usbooks/09. Text <tref id=B9000001423>.

という例が見つかりました。

BNCのsimple search(http://thetis.bl.uk/lookup.html)では，fell a victim　で次の１例，

G0G 1091 The intended beneficiary of this dynastic coup was Osred (II), the son of King Alhred by Osgifu, Aelfwald's sister, a youth of no more than 19 at the time, who reigned for a year but then fell a victim to further shifts of allegiance when in 789 he was taken prisoner, deprived of his kingdom, tonsured at York and expelled, and Aethelred, son of Aethelwald, resumed royal power ( ASC D, s.a. 788, 789).

falling a victim で次の２例，

B0Y 1189 CD's reference to his succeeding the experimental philosophical pig who had died from `taking a bath at too high a temperature', and thus falling a victim `to his thirst for knowledge' is a jocose allusion to Pliny's death during the eruption of Vesuvius, which he was trying to study at close quarters.

G0G 1397 His later Lives do not inspire great confidence in their historical details about a young king seeking the hand of Offa's daughter in marriage and falling a victim to the machinations of Queen Cynethryth, who alleged that Aethelberht's real intention was to reconnoitre the Mercian kingdom with a view to invading it, and when the Chronicon ex Chronicis also claims that Aethelberht was put to death by Offa at the instigation of Queen Cynethryth it is not necessarily independent of the legend.

が検索されました。

頻度の上では圧倒的に無冠詞のものが多いわけですが，a が付く例もないわけではないようです。

辞書学の問題として興味深いのは，どの程度の頻度で無冠詞と断定するのか，ということです。上記２つのコーパスを参照して編纂されたとされるCOBUILD, LDOCE, OALD ではいずれも無冠詞のfall victim to を成句として取り上げてます。

CODでは７版までの用例には a が付いていて，８版からは無冠詞になってますから，時代による用法の変化ということでしょうか。英和辞典の表記もこのあたりの影響で (a) に落ち着いたのでは？と推測します。

　コーパスというのはすごいですね。ほしい用例がたちどころに見つかるのですね。

　ところで小学館 Random House 第２版には fall a victim to 〜 ばかりか fall the victim to 〜 まで載っていました。見出しに fall (a [or the]) victim to と出されると、頻度から見てどの表現が一般的で、どの表現が少ないかの区別がつきません。おそらく fall the victim to 〜 は数少ない例でしょう。

　ＣＯＤの表記の歴史的な解明はとても参考になりました。

確かにおっしゃるとおりですね。ＥＦＬ辞典という立場からは，単に(　)や[　]で済ませるのではなく，頻度によってfall victim to ... (☆fall a [the] victim toは((まれ)))とか，fall victim to ... (☆時にfall a [the] victim toで)といった示し方がされている方が好ましいと思います。
