はじめまして。高校の教師をしています埼玉の杉本と申します。よろしくお願い致します。
最初からダウンロードして通読しました。辞書の世界の広さと深さと面白さに驚嘆しています。
２月に竹蓋さんが「イディオムの成り立ち」の辞書について質問され、井上先生がLong, T.H. (ed.) Longman Dictionary of English Idioms等を紹介され、この辞書から一例として kick the bucket をあげておられました。

私がこのイディオムを知ったのは、当時ＮＨＫの英語会話の講師であった松本亨先生の「ことばの花かご（熟語編）」（英友社, 1961）〜英語らしいイディオムの感覚を養わせてくれた本として忘れることが出来ません〜でそこにはこう書かれています。その頃大好きだった西部劇の連想も何となく手伝って、頭にこびりついていましたので、これを読んで「おやっ」と思いました。
あまりよい話ではないが、昔罪人を死刑にするときは、バケツの上に立たせて首をくくり、執行人はそのバケツをけって処刑したものである。今日では"kick the bucket" は自動詞として「死ぬ」という意味に使われる。
手元の何冊かの辞書を引いてみると、今は次のように二つの説があるようです。
A euphemism for 'to die', it comes from either the suicide's kicking away the bucket on which he/she is standing, in order to hang him/herself, or from the 'bucket beam' on which pigs were hung <after>being slaughtered.

OEDも「自殺」説には言及していませんが、Brandreth, G.: Everyman's Modern Phrase & Fable (J.M. Dent & Sons, 1990)が言うように 'unproven theory'なのだからでしょうか。
松本先生の説は手元の辞書では見あたりませんでしたが、載っている辞書どこかにあるでしょうか。（或いは、もしかすると長いアメリカ滞在中にどこかで聞かれた俗説なのかなとも思いましたが
....）

辞書ではありませんが，たまたま読んでいた本に言及がありました．Raymond W. Gibbs, Jr., The Poetics of Mind: Figurative Thought, Language, and Understanding (Cambridge University Press, 1994), pp. 276-277 です（引用文中のイタリックは大文字に変えました）：
People generally think that KICK THE BUCKET comes from the situation of a condemned man with a rope around his neck who suddenly has the bucket he is standing on kicked out from beneath him. However, the phrase KICK THE BUCKET probably comes from a method of slaughtering hogs where the animal was strung up on a heavy wooden framework and its throat cut. BUCKET is thought be an English corruption of BUQUET, a French word for the wooden framework that the hog kicked in its death struggle.
たまたま勤務先の図書館にあった Slang and Its Analogues, Past and Present, Compiled and edited by John S. Farmer and W. E. Henley (Printed for Subscribers Only, 1896) という7冊本の， KICK THE BUCKET の1785年から 1892年の15例を見ても，絞首刑の例は見当たりません．この説は松本先生が「滞在中にどこかで聞かれた俗説なのか」もしれませんね．

まだ見てはいないのですが，Random House Historical Dictionary of American Slang (Vol. 1: A-G) (Random House, 1994) という大冊の辞書もありますから，そちらにはもう少しくわしい情報があるかもしれません．

この辞書の１・２巻が日本橋の丸善にあったのを覚えていましたので、今日行って立ち読みしてきました。最初見た時欲しかったのですが、なにせ大冊ですし、第１巻A-Gが10,350円($55.00)、第２巻H-O(1997年刊）が13,290円($65.00)もするのであきらめていました。全巻完結したらたぶんCD-ROMでもっと安く手に入るだろうから、その時に考えようと思っています。
話がそれましたが、この辞書には
kick the bucket [despite much speculation, the orig. remains uncert.] to die. Now _colloq_.
とあるだけで語源は載っていませんでした。
初出は、ＯＥＤと同じく 1785 Grose _Vulgar Tongue_: To kick the bucket, to die.
この辞書の full title は、 Rogers, J.: _The Dictionary of Cliches_ (Ballantine Books, 1985)が「豚」説と「自殺」説の二つをあげて最後に、In any event, the phrase was known by 1785, when Francis Gross defined it in _A Classical Dictioanry of the Vulgar Tongue_ as meaning to die.とあるので分かります。
この句を最初に定義したこの辞書はどう説明しているのでしょうか。見てみたいものです。復刻版でも出ていないでしょうか。おそらく「豚」説だけ、もしかすると「自殺」説も載っているか、でも「絞首刑」説は載っていないだろうな等と想像しますが....
それにしても kick the bucket 古い言い方なのですね。

本筋とははずれますが、R.. W. Holder, A Dictionary of American and British Euphemisms (Bath University Press, 1985) （1989年に改訂版が The Faber Dictionary of Euphemismsというタイトルで Faber and Faberから出ています） では、kick の見出しがあり、その説明の中に、"kick the bucket"の由来についての記述があります。
kick (1) to die
Probably from the involuntary spasms of a killed animal..＜中略＞.
The common 'kick the bucket' - from which 'kick it' probably
comes from - is supposed by OED and others to derive from the
'bucket' or beam from which you tied a Norfolk pig to facilitate
slitting its throat and which it then kicked in its death throes.
ここまではいいのですが、それに続けて、
Lexicographers are plagiarists, and that kind of etymology tends to have special appeal for them.
とし、結局筆者自身は
I suspect 'kick the bucket' merely comes from a preferred
method of those who kill themselves, or others, by stringing the
victim up to a beam, and then kicking away the upturned bucket on
which he was standing....
だとしています。
つまり、この句の起源については何の新情報もないのですが、ここでおやっと思ったのは、上のLexicographers are plagiarists, and ...for them.の部分です。いったいどういうつもりでこう書いたのか。｢くすぐり｣なのか、割と本気でこう言っているのか。ちょっと興味を持ちました。
ちなみにHolder自身は an amateur of languageであり、His business interests remain principally in manufacturing based in England, Wales, Ireland and New England.だそうです。（初版の筆者紹介から)

Sidney I. Landau, Dictionaries: The Art and Craft of Lexicography (Charles Scribners Sons, 1984) [ISBN 0-684-18096-0] は 'Plagiarism and "Fair Use"' (pp. 296-298) という一節を設けて次のように言っています：
Dictionaries have always copied from one another, but no reputable dictionary today would dare take over entire sections of another work and print them verbatim, a practice common in the seventeenth century.(p. 296)
また，Jonathon Green, Chasing the Sun: Dictionary-Makers and the Dictionaries They Made (Jonathan Cape, 1996) [ISBN 0-224-04010-3] もこの問題についてかなりくわしく論じています．例えば：
The sheer volume of dictionaries on offer today (perhaps 15,000 of various sizes and types dedicated to the English language alone) means that plagiarism remains a constant, althought the theft these days might better be laid at the feet of commercial rather than scholary imperatives. (p. 29)

須賀＠倉敷天城高校です。"kick the bucket"のお話を楽しく拝見させていただいております。この間 "devious derivations"(Hugh Rawson, New York: Crown Publishers 1994)という本を買いました。それに次のような説明があります。（少し引用が長くなりますが）
kick the bucket.
The "obvious" explanation--that the reference is to
standing on a pail and kicking it away in order to hang oneself
from a rafter--may not be correct. Bucket also is an antique
word, perhaps from the Old French buquet, balance, for a beam or
yoke from which anything may be carried or hung. Thus, the
reference might also be to the beam from which slaughtered pigs
are suspended by their heels, so that the blood will drain out
after their throats have been cut. Shakespeare refers in Henry
IV, Part II (1596)to "he that gibbets on the brewer's
bucket," but it is not clear from the context what kind of
bucket he had in mind. The earliest known example of kick the
bucket in print is from Captain Francis Grose's A Classical
Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue (1785), where the phrase is
defined simply as "to die." The use of the expression
at this date to refer to death in general rather than suicide in
particular argues in favor of the bucket-as-beam theory, as does
the existence of such similar phrases as kick up [one's] heels
and kick [one's] clogs, also meaning simply "to die."
これによるとどうやら"A Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue"という辞書を著者は見ており，そこには"to die"という説明しかないようです。

南出（大阪女子大）です。Kick the bucket の句源についての議論面白く拝見しています。Grose の辞書 -- Captain Francis Grose (1785):A Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue -- のところで議論が止まってしまったようなので、フォローさせていただきます。この辞書は初版以来２版（１７８８）、３版（１７９６）と版を重ね、１８１１年に大幅に増補改訂されA Dictionary of Buckish Slang, University Wit, and Pickpocket Eloquence として出版されました。私の持っているのはこの１８１１年版の復刻版（Papermac, 1981)で、 １７８５年版でないので今まで投稿を控えていました。
前置きが長くなりましたが、この１８１１年版では問題個所は次のようで
To Kick the Bucket. To die. He kicked the bucket one day; he died one day. To kick the clouds before the hotel door, i.e. to be hanged.
句源への言及はありません(To kick the clouds...は増補改訂で追加されたものと思います）。kick the bucket にはブタ説、自殺説に加えて、（西部の）リンチ説があることが紹介されいますが、W. Blevins (1991) :Dictionary of the American West (Facts on File) や大島良行（１９８１）『アメリカ・ウエスタン辞典』（研究社）には見あたりません。しかし、L. & R. Flavell (1991): Dictionary of Idioms and their Origins (Kyle Cathie) には３番目の句源候補として次のように記されています。
Across the Atlantic there is the suggestion that a lynch mob would stand the hapless victim on a bucket, with the rope going up over a tree branch; the bucket would then be kicked away from beneath him.
他の句源辞典を調べたところを総合すると、ブタ説が一位でそれに自殺説が続き、リンチ説が大差をつけられてビリというところでしょうか。

暇にまかせて、Richard A. Spears (back flapに「８歳から言葉を集め、１４歳から辞書を集めた」とあります) の _Slang and Euphemism_(Jonathan David Publishers, Inc., 1981) を何となく見ていましたら、１０ページもの Bibliography があってこの Grose の辞書が含まれていました。

Grose, Francis.: _A Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue_. (1796). Edited by Eric Partridge. New York: Barnes & Noble, 1963
とあって、同一の title でも最近まで版を重ねたようです。
それにしても初版が1785(日本でいえば天明５年!)に出た辞書が１９世紀に一度、そして今世紀に二度、おそらくその時を代表する lexicographer の一人によって増補改訂され、生命を保ってきたという事実に驚かされました。しかも一般向けの辞書ではなく、俗語・卑語を扱った特殊な辞書ですから尚更です。いや、特殊な辞書だからこそ可能だったと言った方が当たっているでしょうか ....
